The introduction of hybrid grape varieties, such as the Vidal and Baco Noir, proved to be particularly successful in the region's climate. These resilient grapes could withstand the challenging weather conditions and produce quality wines.

The turning point for the Niagara-on-the-Lake wine industry came in the 1970s when winemakers started gaining international recognition for their products. The region's unique terroir, influenced by the moderating effect of Lake Ontario, was discovered to be ideal for producing cool-climate wines. Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and Icewine became the region's flagship varietals, captivating wine enthusiasts worldwide.

The establishment of the Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) in the early 1990s further solidified Niagara-on-the-Lake's reputation as a premium wine-producing region. The VQA introduced strict regulations and quality control measures, ensuring that wines labeled with the VQA seal met rigorous standards of excellence. This led to increased consumer confidence, both domestically and internationally, and further propelled the growth of the local wine industry.
